Connecticut's New Health Insurance Marketplace

Access Health CT is the new state's health insurance marketplace. This marketplace will let individuals and small business buy insurance at federally-subsidized rates. The new marketplace will open January 1, 2010. There are many different factors to consider when choosing a health insurance plan.

Silver plans can be beneficial if you need only certain medical services on occasion. You may also qualify for Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs), which lower the out-of-pocket costs for deductibles and coinsurance. You must be enrolled in a Silver-level plan to be eligible for these lower-cost options.

Access Health CT offers many plans, each with its own advantages and limitations. Each plan has a different monthly premium,deductible and copay. The platinum plan is the best option for those who require comprehensive coverage. Platinum plans provide coverage for 90 percent of healthcare costs. They are usually designed for those with severe health conditions. You can also get catastrophic plans for residents younger than 30 years old and those who are eligible for a hardship exemption. This plan is not as comprehensive, but it still offers a low premium and lower deductible. These plans come with different levels of financial aid.


Access Health CT plans can be switched to if you are currently covered under an employer sponsored plan. However, you will need to wait until the fall open enrollment period to sign up for this plan. You can also switch to the Covered Connecticut program if you're eligible. However, you may not qualify for tax credits, so you should wait until the Special Enrollment Period to do so.

You could receive tax credits of up to $1,000 per calendar year depending on your income.
